How to choose the right NDIS Support Coordinator for you
Yes, you can choose your own NDIS support coordinator, and switching is easier than most people think. Here's what to look for and how to do it.
Your support coordinator is the person who turns your NDIS plan into a real life. Get the right one and everything moves; get the wrong one and you'll spend a year chasing emails. Here's how to pick well, and yes, you absolutely can choose your own, even if someone's already been assigned.
Can I choose my own NDIS support coordinator?
Yes. Support coordination is included in your plan as a flexible Capacity Building support, which means you pick the provider, not the NDIA. If you don't like the one you've got, you can change. You don't need a reason and you don't need anyone's permission.
What makes a good NDIS support coordinator?
- Local knowledge, they know the Central Coast clinics, allied health, community groups and housing options, not just a Google list.
- Responsive, replies within 24 hours, picks up the phone, and doesn't ghost you when things get hard.
- Plan-literate, they can read the line items in your plan and tell you exactly what each pot of money can be used for.
- Advocates for you, pushes back to the NDIA when something isn't right, helps you prep for reviews, attends meetings if you want them to.
- Independent-minded, willing to refer you to providers outside their own company when that's the better fit.
Questions to ask before you sign
- How many participants do you currently coordinate? (Watch for over-loaded coordinators with 60+ clients.)
- Are you based locally, or coordinating remotely from another state?
- Will I have one named coordinator, or a rotating team?
- How do you handle plan reassessments and reviews?
- What's your response time on calls and emails?
How to change your support coordinator
Easier than you'd think. Send a short email or service-agreement-end notice to your current coordinator, then sign a service agreement with the new one. Plan-managed and self-managed participants can switch any time. NDIA-managed participants need to make sure the new coordinator is a registered provider (we are, NDIS registration number 450 253 725).
The fit test
After your first meeting, ask yourself: did they listen more than they talked? Did they explain options without pushing their own services? Did they leave you with a clear next step? If yes, that's a coordinator worth keeping.
