NDIA vs NDIS, what's the difference and why does it matter to you?

Everyone uses these two acronyms like they're the same thing. They're not. Here's the difference in 60 seconds, plus what it means for your plan.

NDIA vs NDIS, what's the difference and why does it matter to you?

Walk into any NDIS meeting and you'll hear NDIS and NDIA tossed around like they mean the same thing. They don't, and knowing the difference will save you a heap of confusion.

The NDIS is the scheme

The National Disability Insurance Scheme is the actual programme, the funding, the rules, the supports. When you say 'I'm on the NDIS', you mean your supports are funded under this scheme.

The NDIA is the agency that runs it

The National Disability Insurance Agency is the government body that manages the scheme. They decide who's eligible, they approve plans, they audit providers like us, and they pay invoices for NDIA-managed participants. Think of NDIS as the law and NDIA as the cops.

Why this actually matters

  • When you call '1800 800 110' you're calling the NDIA, not 'the NDIS'.
  • When your plan is 'NDIA-managed', it's the agency paying invoices, not a private plan manager.
  • When you read about 'NDIS reforms', that's policy changes; the NDIA is the body that has to implement them.
  • When a provider says they're 'NDIS registered', they mean the NDIA has audited and approved them. (We are, NDIS registration number 450 253 725.)

The everyday version

If you only remember one thing: NDIS = your funding. NDIA = the people you ring when something's wrong with your funding.
